Fabulous fireworks along the Arno at 10 p.m. conclude Florence’s celebrations to St. John the Baptist, the city’s patron saint, on June 24. First, there is a parade in historical costume that starts at the Church of Santa Maria Novella and ends at the Church of Santa Croce, where the Calcio Storico is then played in the dirt-covered square in front of the church. The game is a combination of soccer, rugby, and big time wrestling, all played while wearing 16^th century costumes. The four teams represent the four traditional neighborhoods of the city: Santa Croce (blue), Santo Spirito (white), Santa Maria Novella (red), and San Giovanni (green).

on Easter morning, the Scoppio del Carro will be celebrated in front of the Duomo in Florence, it is a mixed pagan/religious ceremony marking both Easter and Spring. A thirty-foot carved and painted wooden cart is pulled by flower-bedecked white oxen from Porta al Prato to Piazza del Duomo. A mechanical dove ‘flies’ down a line through the open doors of the cathedral, picks up ‘fire’ at the altar, returns to the cart and ignites the explosion of beautiful fireworks. Before the carro explodes a parade of armored guards, costumed musicians, and elegant nobility attired in 15th century dress enter the cathedral for the Easter Mass. Teams of flag throwers entertain the crowd of over 10,000 people who gather for the Scoppio del Carro. When the cart is ignited, the fireworks last for about 15 minutes, during which the bells in Giotto’s Campanile ring forth.

As you know I love travelling!! I recently had a great trip in Tanzania with my sons Filippo and Raffaele. We had a fabulous time. The safari was amazing, but I have to highlight that is an unforgettable experience travelling with adult children

SAN MINIATO AL MONTE

it is my favourite Church !!! You will find San Miniato al Monte above Piazzale Michelangelo overlooking Florence. I suggest you to go in the afternoon to hear the monks do the Gregorian chant at vespers which was at 5,30 in Summer or 4,30 in Winter. The mass has held in the lower chapel. To get to the church there are several flights of stairs so be prepared for that. Once at the top, you will be glad that you made the climb. Built between the 11th and 13th century, the exterior of the Church of San Miniato is decorated with green and white marble in geometric patterns similar to the facades of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella. A mosaic from the 12th century decorates the facade over a central window. The centre of the Basilica includes marble intarsias representing the signs of the zodiac, don’t miss it !! The monumental cemetery in front and back of the church contains the tombs of illustrious men, such as Carlo Lorenzini (Collodi), author of Pinocchio.

I I love them !!! they are very popular in South of Italy and so good…you have to make a pizza dough and flat then you fill in with tomatoes, mozzarella salt and pepper you close them and deep fry. Do you want to learn to make it ?? come at Le Stanze and …cooking together !!
